One of the fundamental goals of nature conservation is to preserve original habitats and restore them when necessary. The Bika-r\u00e9t, located on the outskirts of Bab\u00f3csa in Somogy County, was once a water-rich area. However, over the years, its water channels became blocked, causing the meadow to dry out. Thanks to an EU-funded nature conservation project, the area now has the chance to become a well-hydrated, wet meadow once again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The key to the solution was redirecting water from the Rinya Creek into an old side branch, which naturally replenishes the marshy meadow. To achieve this, a water outlet structure was built, and sediment-filled sections were cleared through mechanical landscaping. To maintain an optimal water level, three bottom weirs were constructed, ensuring a long-term, stable water supply for both the meadow and the surrounding hardwood floodplain forest. As a result, water does not simply flow through the area but remains for extended periods, creating favorable conditions for local wildlife.<\/p>\n

The project’s goal was not only to restore water supply but also to enhance biodiversity. A smaller area previously used for agriculture was planted with native tree species, creating a new forest section. Additionally, the Bika-r\u00e9t was made more attractive for nature enthusiasts: a birdwatching tower and informational signs were installed, and binoculars were provided so visitors can observe rare bird species up close.<\/p>\n

This successful intervention demonstrates that with the right expertise and dedication, even damaged habitats can be revived, contributing to the preservation of the local ecosystem. The Bika-r\u00e9t has now returned to what it once was\u2014a valuable natural treasure rich in wildlife.<\/p>\n
