Among Esztergom\u2019s tourist attractions, the Basilica is undoubtedly the crown jewel. This impressive monument is becoming increasingly popular with both domestic and international visitors. Thanks to an EU-funded project, its surroundings have been upgraded and revitalized, giving a fresh boost to local tourism.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Basilica is not only a historical and cultural landmark but also a spiritual center and a major tourist destination. The renovation has increased Esztergom\u2019s tourism appeal and marketing value, attracting more visitors to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Castle Hill in Esztergom has been a key site in Hungarian history since the founding of the state. During Prince G\u00e9za\u2019s reign, it served as a royal seat, and St. Stephen was later crowned here. After the establishment of the Archdiocese of Esztergom, the old St. Adalbert Cathedral was built on the site. Following centuries of history, construction of the current monumental Basilica began in 1822 under Archbishop S\u00e1ndor Rudnay, based on the grand designs of P\u00e1l K\u00fchnel and J\u00e1nos Packh. The church was consecrated in 1856 and has since stood as Hungary\u2019s largest ecclesiastical building and a symbol of the country\u2019s Catholic life.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Visitors approach the Basilica via a large artificial ramp from St. Stephen Square. As part of the project, the ramp was completely renovated, and the cobblestone paths leading to the main cathedral were rebuilt. The landscaping project covered nearly 7,000 square meters, adding lawns, flowerbeds, and scattered paving for visual variety. A wide range of trees, shrubs, perennials, and saplings were planted, supported by an irrigation system. The electrical network and public lighting were upgraded, and 18 new benches and six informational boards were installed.<\/p>\n

A modern Tourinform Point was also established on the square. Part of a nationwide network of nearly 100 offices, it provides visitors with helpful information about the region. The project also produced a seven-language guide to Castle Hill.<\/p>\n

Thanks to these renovations, St. Stephen Square and Castle Hill are now more beautiful and visitor-friendly than ever, further enhancing the Basilica\u2019s and Esztergom\u2019s appeal as a top tourist destination.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n

The development was implemented from EU funding in the project GINOP-7.1.9-17-2020-00043 under the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme.<\/p>\n
