Lake P\u00e9teri is a special wetland in the Duna-Tisza Sand Dunes. An EU grant helped restore the original riverbed, which is a significant step in the nature protection of the region.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 220-hectare saline lake and the saline meadows and pastures around it have been under nature protection since 1976. The area\u2019s unique birdlife is also unique in Hungary.<\/p>\n

The lake has been shaped by human intervention for decades. As a result of regulations established here at the beginning of the 20th century, the free water surface has significantly decreased, and the riverbed has been utilized as a fish pond. The previously uniform water surface has been divided with dams, creating a lake system consisting of three units, and the natural water flow has ceased, which has had an adverse effect on the wetlands and the species living here.<\/p>\n

The aim of the project implemented by the Kiskuns\u00e1g National Park Directorate was to restore the original bed structure of the former saline lake as much as possible. By removing the artificial obstacles, the lake bed became continuous again, and all facilities that once served the fish farming carried out here were dismantled.<\/p>\n

The return of natural water dynamics triggered spectacular changes. The coastal zones gradually transformed, saline habitats reappeared, and water-related vegetation gained ground. All this created even more favorable conditions for the bird population, as Lake P\u00e9teri is an important resting and feeding place for many species, especially during migration periods.<\/p>\n

The rehabilitated area also offers new experiences for those interested in nature. The observation points and educational trail created around the lake give visitors the opportunity to study the everyday life of birds and wetlands up close, while nature conservation considerations remain paramount.<\/p>\n

The renewal of Lake P\u00e9teri contributed to the preservation of biodiversity, strengthened the resilience of the landscape, and in the long term created a more livable, sustainable environment in the heart of the Sand Dunes.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n
