Tatabánya has taken another significant step in its development with the completion of a new road connecting the Bánhida and Sárberek districts. More than just a transportation project, this road marks a major milestone in the city’s urban development, filling a gap in the local road network that has existed for over a decade.
The project created an 824-meter modern roadway featuring widened junctions, a combined bicycle and pedestrian path, and two bus stops. A standout feature of the EU-funded project is the new railway underpass, which allows the road to pass safely beneath the Budapest–Hegyeshalom railway line. This enhances safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike, while reducing accident risks and easing traffic congestion.
Improved accessibility and safer travel are key to boosting the local economy and creating a more livable city. Residents now benefit from faster, safer connections between the two districts, improving daily commutes and workforce mobility. For Bánhida locals, access to Tatabánya’s “green heart”—Millennium Park, the Boating Lake, and a variety of recreational opportunities—has become much easier.
Economically, the road also strengthens connections to the Tatabánya Industrial Park, potentially attracting new investments and jobs in the long term.
The new connector road highlights Tatabánya’s strategic approach to urban development while delivering tangible improvements in traffic flow and district connectivity, paving the way for a safer, more livable city.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP-6.1.5-16-TB1-2017-00002 under the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme.
