A new chapter for the Bábolna brickworks – a leisure park takes its place

2026. 03. 27.

In Bábolna, a once-abandoned brownfield site that had formerly been home to a brick factory has been transformed into one of the town’s most attractive multifunctional community spaces.

Thanks to EU funding, this formerly industrial area in the southwestern part of the town has been given new life through environmentally conscious rehabilitation and redevelopment. As a result, it has become an integral part of the town centre.

Following the necessary environmental remediation, the old buildings were completely demolished. This was followed by the construction of sports facilities and the large-scale reconstruction of the park’s planting and landscape features.

The new multifunctional Leisure Park, covering nearly ten hectares, is built around four main functions: culture, recreation, sport, and transport. Together, these expand the leisure opportunities available to both local residents and visitors.

One of the park’s most defining features is water. An island was created on the large lake, while a boardwalk on stilts crosses the smaller one. Along the shoreline, walking and cycling paths offer the perfect setting for a peaceful stroll or an active outing. Beside the wetland area, a nature trail and a lookout tower give visitors the chance to explore — and even admire from above — the area’s natural treasures and wildlife.

The lake is not only a striking landscape feature, but also a centre for active recreation. Visitors can go boating or pedal boating, while piers and lakeside rest areas provide places to pause and relax. Fire pits also create a welcoming setting for community gatherings and outdoor events.

The Leisure Park is a true paradise for lovers of an active lifestyle. It offers facilities for seven different sports, including tennis, running, cycling, rowing, outdoor exercise, strength training, and archery. Part of the outdoor fitness trail runs along the shore of the large lake, making exercise a unique experience in a beautiful natural setting.

An important hub of the park’s community life is the recreation building, which welcomes visitors with a buffet, a friendly lounge area, and a pleasant terrace. As a result of the development, 6.5 hectares of green space have been renewed, and the former industrial site now serves the people of Bábolna as a vibrant, green, and lively recreational area.
