Approximately 13,000 plants have been placed on more than 2200 square meters with the support of the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Program (TOP) in Villány. The project creates a more livable environment for residents and visitors, thereby greatly improving the attractiveness and competitiveness of the city.
The town of Baranya County won the third place of the European Green City National Award in 2023 after implementing large-scale investment in greening and urban renewal through the TOP project. Villány is the “city of wine” and is one of the most famous Hungarian settlements with its cellars and events related to wine that tourists can visit all year round. In addition to increasing tourist attractiveness, it is also important that the two thousand local residents be surrounded by pleasant, environmentally and children-friendly streets and squares.
For this purpose, several public areas were renewed in the city, and they received a unified, orderly image. Comfortable spaces with almond trees, ornamental plants, shrubs were born. A nice green area was created on Eislingen Square with a park, a walkway, a fountain and a climbing castle. The intensive development of green areas also mitigates the adverse environmental impacts, as with the increase of humidity the degree of urban heat decreases. Of course, the collection and utilization of rainwater could not be overlooked. In addition, bicycle storage facilities, street lights, drinking fountain were placed and an electric car charger was also installed in the parking lot. The building of the Villányi Culture House and Library has also been renovated, and even the Event Area has been completely transformed: new playgrounds and green areas await families, as well as a bicycle stop and rental. In the neighboring area, as the gateway to the city parking lot, an educational trail awaits visitors.
With the modernization of the buildings and the improvement of the green environment, the population’s relationship with the settlement is strengthening, the use of community spaces is increasing, and the city becomes more pleasant and comfortable for the population.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP-2.1.2-16-BA1-2017-00005 under the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme.
