One of the main objectives of the Environment and Energy Efficiency Operational Program (KEHOP) was the development of municipal water supply, wastewater collection and treatment, and wastewater management. Projects implemented under this priority have achieved significant results, as approximately 300,000 people now have access to better drinking water, and a similar number benefit from improved wastewater treatment. One such successfully implemented development is the project titled “Modernization of the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Csepreg,” which aimed to establish a modern wastewater treatment plant and associated sewerage network. Thanks to this development, the regional utility provider is capable of preserving the surface and groundwater of the settlements of Csepreg, Horvátzsidány, Kiszsidány, and Ólmod at a 21st-century standard.
The modernization and capacity expansion of the wastewater treatment plant were overdue. Due to the significant increase in new connections, the plant struggled with overload both hydraulically and in terms of organic material. The severity of the problem was evident when new wastewater connections had to be restricted to the system. Often, during rainy periods, precipitation entered the wastewater network through legally and illegally connected rainwater drains or improperly designed cleaning chambers, significantly impairing the efficiency of the wastewater treatment plant.
Significant developments were implemented within the framework of the KEHOP project to address these issues. The wastewater treatment plant and sewerage network have been technologically and technically expanded, modernized, and made suitable to meet increased demands. With the modernized system, the disposal and treatment of wastewater for the population have been resolved, and the expanded capacity has created more opportunities for urban development.
Furthermore, the project provided the opportunity for the entire population of the municipality to connect to the sewerage network. This is particularly important for the success of the development because it is necessary for a high percentage of residents to connect to the established system to achieve sufficient efficiency.
The wastewater treatment plant serving the region meets the strictest regulations in force in Hungary. Through modern, professional treatment, the residents of Csepreg and the surrounding settlements can live healthier lives, free from the health risks posed by wastewater.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project KEHOP-2.2.1-15-2015-00026 under the Environmental and Energy Efficiency Operational Programme.
