Anyone familiar with the road leading to Dunaszentpál knows that cycling there used to be far from comfortable. Although traffic is relatively light, the road is narrow and its surface was in poor condition, making it difficult and unsafe for cyclists, especially after dark. That has now changed with the construction of a separate, two-way cycle path.
Dunaszentpál is a small cul-de-sac village surrounded by the Mosoni-Duna, so most people travelling there are local residents. During the summer, however, visitors also come from nearby settlements to enjoy the local beach, many of them by bicycle. The new cycle path therefore benefits visitors as well, but it is particularly valuable for local people who regularly travel by bike for work, shopping or everyday errands.
Cyclists can now reach nearby settlements more safely, while destinations such as Hédervár, Dunaszeg and Győrújfalu have also become easier to access. Some residents even cycle as far as Győr. Whether the journey is to work, a pilgrimage site, a restaurant or café, Lake Tüske, the shops, a football match or simply to take care of everyday business, cycling has become a safer and more convenient option.
The development has also connected Dunaszentpál more closely to the wider cycling network of the Szigetköz region.
Before the project, the road leading out of the village was narrow, in poor condition and particularly hazardous for cyclists. Although nearby workplaces, settlements and tourist attractions were within cycling distance, travelling to them by bike often meant sharing an unsuitable road with motor traffic.
This changed with a cycling infrastructure project implemented by the Municipality of Dunaszentpál. From the edge of the village towards its administrative boundary, an almost one-kilometre-long, two-way cycle path was built alongside the road, providing cyclists with a safe and separate route. Within the built-up area, cycle markings were also added to the road to draw drivers’ attention to the presence of cyclists and encourage greater caution.
The project covered more than the construction of the cycle path itself. Bicycle parking was installed in the village centre, while a maintenance vehicle and additional equipment were purchased to help keep the route in good condition. The equipment includes a snow plough, trailer and mower, supporting year-round maintenance of the cycling infrastructure.
Additional street lighting was installed at junctions, and landscaping work was also carried out around the new route.
The development has improved conditions for sustainable travel between Dunaszentpál and the surrounding settlements, while making everyday cycling safer and more convenient. With a better route now available, even those who previously preferred to drive may be more tempted to choose a bicycle instead.
