The Kis-Balaton region is the kind of place that invites you to slow down, get on a bike and take in the landscape along the way. For visitors, cycling is one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the area. For local residents, though, it is much more than a leisure activity. A bicycle can also be a practical way to get from one village to another in everyday life.
That is exactly what the new cycling infrastructure between Sármellék and Zalavár was designed to support. Developed with EU funding, the route makes cycling easier not only for tourists and recreational riders, but also for people travelling to work, school, public services or public transport connections.
The investment included two main sections. More than 2.7 kilometres of dedicated cycle path were built outside the settlements, while a further 1.45-kilometre section was created within the built-up area. Together, they provide more than four kilometres of improved cycling conditions between the two villages.
The new route offers a safer, more comfortable and more sustainable alternative for everyday journeys. It also makes workplaces and local services easier to reach without relying on a car. Safety played an important role throughout the project, with the needs of cyclists, pedestrians, children, older people and people with disabilities all taken into account.
Building a cycle path, however, is only one part of creating a more bike-friendly area. The project therefore also included road-safety and awareness-raising programmes designed to encourage cycling and strengthen local cycling culture.
The benefits go well beyond mobility. Better cycling infrastructure can reduce car use, help lower noise and air pollution, and encourage a more active lifestyle. It can also make villages more pleasant places to live by creating calmer streets, easier local connections and more environmentally conscious travel habits.
Long-term maintenance was also built into the project. New equipment, including a tractor, lawnmowers, a sweeper, a leaf vacuum and winter maintenance tools, helps keep the route and its surroundings safe and in good condition throughout the year.
Because even the best cycle path only works well if it is properly looked after. Regular cleaning, grass cutting, repairs and winter de-icing are all essential to ensure that cyclists can use the route comfortably and safely in every season.
The cycling development between Sármellék and Zalavár is therefore about much more than adding a new route to the map. It connects communities, supports greener travel and makes everyday mobility easier. At the same time, it offers one more reason to discover the Kis-Balaton region from the saddle.

The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP-1.4.1-19-BA1-2019-00005 under the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme.
