The feeling is familiar when, due to poor road quality, slow-moving traffic, or congested intersections, one can only sigh: it would have been faster by train!…? Well, it seems that in the vicinity of the 21st main road in Heves and Nógrád counties, these times are slowly becoming just a memory! Within the framework of the Integrated Transport Development Operational Program, several existing road sections have been transformed into expressways with the support of the European Union, significantly reducing the likelihood of traffic jams and the frustrations caused by heavy traffic.
As part of the project, the road surfaces were reinforced, and several existing roads were transformed into 2×2 lane, high-speed, divided highways. In order to ensure smoother traffic flow and improve road safety, new “T” type and turbo roundabouts were built, as well as other structures, and deceleration and acceleration lanes were created. The new connecting road between Mátraverebély and Szentkút has been built, which is also a beneficial development for tourism in the region, as it has become easier to access the National Shrine, a Catholic pilgrimage site run by Franciscans, located at the border of the town of Mátraverebély.
One of the most important results of the project is that the traffic safety and traffic engineering problems on the main road No. 21 have been solved, making the road section much safer. The municipalities involved in the project are: Apc, Bátonyterenye, Hatvan, Jobbágyi, Kisterenye, Lőrinci, Mátraszőlős, Mátraverebély, Pásztó, Salgótarján, Szurdokpüspöki, Tar, Vizslás, Zagyvaszántó.
The development affecting multiple roads overall improves the transportation infrastructure, contributes to increasing transportation efficiency, and supports efforts towards sustainable transportation, thereby also promoting the economic and tourism development of the region.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project IKOP-4.1.0-15-2016-00006 under the Integrated Transport Development Operational Programme.
