A community space for seniors in Verőce

2025. 12. 19.

Every morning, you leave home at the same time. You walk slowly and thoughtfully, yet with quiet determination, down the hillside, beneath the railway bridge, and along Hunyadi János Street to the main road.  There you turn right and continue on until you reach the beautiful building where you know you are always welcome.

The day care club for older residents is well known throughout Verőce. Some of its visitors walked past it every day in their younger years; others once worked there themselves as caregivers. Now, after their more active retirement years—and in some cases after losing a partner—they gladly make use of the services the club provides. By the years following the turn of the millennium, the old building had grown worn and outdated. Although the strong sense of community made up for many shortcomings, it became clear that renewal was long overdue. In the period after the COVID pandemic, the club—almost symbolizing a new beginning—was able to move into a renovated, more beautiful building.

With the support of a European Union grant, the Municipality of Verőce renewed its day care services for older people, expanding capacity and relocating the club to a new site in the heart of the village. The goal of the project was to ensure that local residents have access to high-quality social services in a modern, sustainable environment. The elegant new building now provides dignified, professional care for older residents, contributing to an improved quality of life across the community.

As part of the development, a previously unused section of the building was completely transformed. The new Seniors’ Club began operating in a bright, accessible, and energy-efficient space. Capacity was expanded, with special attention given to the care of people living with dementia; a dedicated activity room was created specifically for them. Alongside the renovation, modern furniture and equipment were purchased, as well as two new vehicles to support daily operations and care.

For older people, a community space that can be visited every day offers safety, structure, and meaning. Shared exercise, games, conversations, laughter, balanced meals, and regular movement all play an essential role in ensuring that aging is not marked by isolation, but by active and joyful participation in life.

Those who regularly attend the club know they are always welcomed with a kind word and a familiar smile. Many say this daily routine has become an integral part of their lives—a steady anchor in a constantly changing world, and a reason to rise each morning. And while the building itself has changed, the spirit of the place remains the same: a meeting point where memories of the past blend seamlessly with the joys of the present.

The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP_PLUSZ-3.3.2-21-PT1-2022-00026 under the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme.
