For many decades, residents of Madaras and Katymár had to deal with a serious problem: there was no sewer system or working wastewater treatment plant. Finding a long-term solution to wastewater and environmental issues was essential. Thanks to EU funding, this has now become possible.
Before the project, households managed their wastewater with individual tanks and soakaways. These systems could no longer cope with growing needs. Groundwater was at risk of pollution, the environment was under pressure, and families faced rising costs. Change was unavoidable.
Now, the entire built-up areas of Madaras and Katymár are connected to a modern, safe, and fully compliant sewer network. A new, environmentally friendly wastewater treatment plant was also built. The project covers over 5.4 million square meters, giving 2,160 properties the chance to connect. Many residents joined in the first year, and by 2026 all homes are expected to have active connections.
The modern treatment plant ensures that all discharged water meets Hungarian and EU environmental standards. Old, isolated, and often unsafe solutions have been replaced, making a big difference for both the environment and public health. Groundwater and the local ecosystem are now protected for the long term.
The project also brings economic benefits. A reliable sewer system supports local development and increases investor confidence. Residents enjoy a higher quality of life: property values have risen, individual costs have decreased, and the living environment is healthier and more comfortable.
This project is more than just a technical upgrade—it is an investment in the future. Madaras and Katymár have created a solid foundation for development in the decades to come.
