A fresh start through home and knowledge

2025. 10. 13.

Without a stable home and job, reintegrating into society is especially difficult for people experiencing homelessness. The first steps toward change require opportunities that offer real alternatives. The EU co-financed project run by the Myrai Religious Public Benefit Association provided multi-faceted support, giving participants a solid foundation for starting over.

As an initial step toward social reintegration, the association rented five apartments in Zugló, Budapest, fully furnished with essential household items for those in need. Additional necessities—clothing, bedding, towels, and other items—were collected through donations. Thanks to the furnishings and supplies, participants were able to live in safe, home-like conditions.

Housing was complemented by training programs focusing on three main areas: basic computer skills, employment-readiness workshops, and courses to develop self-advocacy and organizational skills. Classes were held in small groups of ten, allowing for personalized instruction. The programs aimed both to develop competencies supporting social integration and to facilitate long-term employment. During the courses, participants also received living allowances and meals, ensuring financial difficulties would not prevent anyone from taking part.

A key part of the project was also providing opportunities for community experiences. Five group events were organized, bringing together participants, professional staff, and, where appropriate, family members and friends. These gatherings helped build a sense of community and offered a space to share challenges and explore solutions together.

In Zugló, the combination of housing, training, financial support, and community activities laid the groundwork for lasting change. This comprehensive approach has proven more effective in helping people experiencing homelessness maintain independence and sustain their new life situations over the long term.

The development was implemented from EU funding in the project VEKOP-7.1.5-16-2017-00006 under the Competitive Central Hungary Operational Program.
