With support from the European Union, the dormitory of the Korányi Frigyes Greek Catholic Primary School, Secondary School and Dormitory in Nagykálló has undergone a major energy-efficiency upgrade. The aim was to reduce the building’s energy use while creating a more comfortable environment for students and staff.
The Nyíregyháza Diocese took over the management of this long-established institution in 2017. The school provides primary and secondary education, as well as residential accommodation. The dormitory is home to 172 students and supports them in their everyday lives.
The four-storey building was constructed in 1975 and has a floor area of more than 5,300 square metres. Its energy systems had become outdated and no longer met modern requirements, making the renovation necessary.
During the project, the building received new thermal insulation and modern windows and doors. Solar panels were also installed on the roof to reduce the amount of electricity taken from the grid. In addition, thermostatic valves were fitted to the radiators, allowing the temperature in each room to be controlled more accurately. This makes the building more comfortable and helps prevent unnecessary energy use.
The improvements significantly increased the dormitory’s energy efficiency. Its energy rating improved from GG to BB, which means lower energy consumption and reduced operating costs.
The renovation will provide long-term benefits for the institution. The dormitory is now more sustainable and economical to operate, while offering better conditions for studying, relaxing and spending time together as a community.
