Good news for train travellers and advocates of sustainable transportation in Vas County: the Szombathely-Kőszeg railway line has been renewed!

As a result of the project implemented with European Union support under the Integrated Transport Development Operational Programme, travel on the affected railway line has become more comfortable, faster, and environmentally- friendly. The aim of the project was to improve the quality of public transportation, prioritising rail-based solutions over car traffic, while closely integrating the line’s stops into the regional transportation system. In order to make rail transport more popular, several comfort elements have been added: new 55-centimeter high platforms with modern furniture, rain shelters, and LED lighting have been built in Kőszeg and at the other seven stops along the line. They also installed a visual passenger information system, which greatly facilitates orientation. In the background, significant technological developments have also been taking place: an optical network necessary for telecommunication connections has been established, making the railway line safer. In Kőszeg, a truly special solution was also born: here, the first intermodal platform on the GYSEV network was built, allowing buses to stop directly next to the railway platform, making transfers comfortable, quick, and simple.

For those arriving by car, there is a P+R parking lot, and for cyclists, there is a covered bicycle storage with 40 spaces available. The modernisation does not stop here: the track network of Kőszeg station has also been renewed, new signaling devices have been installed, and two structures have been completely rebuilt. These comprehensive developments not only make rail transport more comfortable and efficient but also represent an important step forward in terms of environmental protection, as public transportation offers a more sustainable alternative to individual car travel.

If you haven’t chosen the train on the Szombathely and Kőszeg route yet, it’s time to give it a try!
