Community building in the spirit of environmental awareness

2025. 02. 21.

Within the framework of the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme, with EU support, the EURO-ÖKOLAND Hungary Foundation from Sárospatak implemented a unique series of community-organizing events aimed at promoting the bio-wine tourism and natural values of the region. The foundation’s goal is to inspire the local community with entertaining yet in-depth educational activities and to support Hungary in taking a leading role in the implementation of the EU’s climate strategy.

Tokaj-Hegyalja – one of the most renowned wine-producing regions in our country – is located in the heart of the Zemplén Mountains, and the wine produced here is often referred to as the king of wines. For the sustainability of local grape and wine production, it is of paramount importance to gradually replace traditional methods with innovative, bio-based solutions. The goal is for grape cultivation to increasingly take place without synthetic chemical pesticides, thereby protecting the environment and health. During the community events, these new, environmentally conscious solutions were promoted, aiming to encourage the population to actively contribute to these changes.

The events offered exciting programs for every generation, focusing on the dual themes of culture and sustainability. The audience could participate in concerts, reading evenings, and trivia contests touching on important environmental and sustainability topics. Two workshops were organized, which introduced participants to the intricacies of organic farming, organic grape growing, and organic wine production. In September 2022, the “bio-picnic” took place, which proved to be an excellent opportunity for local organic farmers to showcase their products. For the younger ones, they made the environmental values of Sárospatak recognizable and exciting through playful tasks. Visitors received seedling coupons, which they could redeem at the Mezőcsát Nursery. Thus, 200 new trees were planted, contributing to a greener future for the region.

During the project, the organizers paid special attention to ensuring that all programs took place in accessible venues, providing everyone with the opportunity to fully experience the community events.

The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP-7.1.1-16-H-ESZA-2020-01791 under the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme.
