Digital control on the rails – GYSEV railway lines modernised

2026. 03. 23.

A new era has begun on the GYSEV railway network. Today, traffic on several key lines can be managed from a single control center using a digital system, enabling faster, safer, and more efficient operations.

With the introduction of centralized traffic control, the railway network can now be supervised and directed from one location. This has made train operations smoother and allows specialists to respond more quickly to changing traffic situations. It has also increased line capacity, meaning more trains can run safely on the network. The project was made possible with support from the European Union.

It wasn’t always like this. Previously, signaling systems operated independently at each station. While these systems remain in place, they have been upgraded to allow remote control. Today, traffic is managed centrally from the control room in Szombathely. On Line 17, the stations Hatmajor, Püspökmolnári, Vasvár, Pácsony, and Egervár–Vasboldogasszony have been integrated into the system, while on Line 20, Porpác and Vép are now also centrally controlled. In addition, Lines 15 and 21 are operated from Szombathely, with the original systems still available as backup.

Further developments are linked to the control center in Csorna, which oversees stations including Ölbő-Alsószeleste, Hegyfalu, Répcelak, Beled, Szil-Sopronnémeti, Bősárkány, Jánossomorja, and Mosonszolnok. At the same time, the control center at Sopron passenger station has been upgraded and now supervises traffic at Fertőboz and Harka.

The project also introduced a modern communication and IT infrastructure. High-speed optical data connections, digital telecommunications systems, and a dedicated railway radio network now support operations. Several essential systems have been brought under central supervision as well, including overhead power supply, switch heating during winter, and station lighting. Modern fire protection and security systems have been installed at stations and operational sites, while audio and visual passenger information systems help keep travelers informed.

Beyond traffic control, the upgrades have modernized many technical aspects of railway operations. Level crossing systems have been improved on several lines, and new solutions have been introduced to allow more flexible traffic management.

As a result of the investment, the GYSEV network now operates with a modern digital control system, making rail transport in the region safer, faster, and more efficient.
