One of the greatest challenges of modern healthcare is preventing hospital-acquired infections and curbing antibiotic resistance. In response, the Péterfy Sándor Street Hospital, Outpatient Clinic and Traumatology Center has implemented a major development project with support from the European Union. The initiative aimed primarily at modernizing hygiene conditions and improving the overall quality of patient care.
As one of Budapest’s key healthcare institutions, the Péterfy Hospital provides care for thousands of patients every day. Beyond serving the residents of the central districts of the capital, the hospital also offers specialized services on a national level, treating millions of people across the country. With nearly 1,500 hospital beds in operation, the continuous improvement of patient safety is essential to its daily work.
Within the framework of the EU-funded project, equipment worth over HUF 60 million was procured to support everyday hygiene practices. The hospital purchased state-of-the-art touchless hand sanitizer and soap dispensers, portable disinfectant holders, a surface decontamination system designed to remove contaminants such as radioactive materials and reduce exposure to hazardous substances, as well as a specialized endoscope washer and disinfection unit.
The project was managed internally by an experienced team of professionals who oversaw the entire process—from planning to completion—ensuring a well-prepared, smooth, and successful implementation.
Thanks to these new devices, hand hygiene compliance will be strengthened, and the rate of hospital-acquired infections is expected to decrease significantly. Additional major benefits include shorter hospital stays, reduced use of antibiotics and disinfectants, less need for medical supplies, and, overall, greater patient satisfaction.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project VEKOP-6.3.5-17-2017-00020 under the Competitive Central Hungary Operational Programme.
