The bicycle has long been part of everyday life. It is an incredibly versatile means of transport, whether used for leisure, commuting, sport, or even carrying goods and cargo. With bicycles available in countless styles and designs to meet such a wide range of needs, manufacturers can only remain competitive by continuously innovating and investing in modern technologies.
Based in Esztergom, Neuzer Bicycle Ltd. has been a prominent player in Hungary’s bicycle industry for more than three decades. The company develops and manufactures its own bicycles, offering a broad range of models from city bikes to electric bicycles and bikes designed for specialised uses. It also has a strong presence in export markets. More recently, Neuzer was able to expand and modernise its production facilities through an EU-funded project, in line with wider efforts to strengthen Hungary’s economy and industrial competitiveness.
The project consisted of three main elements. The first was the construction of a new automated high-bay warehouse directly next to the company’s production facility. Its significantly increased storage capacity, combined with an intelligent warehouse management system, has made the handling of components faster, more efficient and more predictable. This is particularly valuable at a time when unexpected disruptions to international supply chains can create serious challenges for manufacturers. The new logistics centre has helped ensure smoother production by reducing the risk of interruptions and maintaining a reliable supply of essential components. The warehouse is also supported by a solar energy system that fully covers the building’s energy needs. The purchase and installation of the solar panels formed the second element of the project.
The third element involved the installation of a new high-capacity wheel production line. The automated wheel-lacing and truing equipment has significantly increased production capacity while delivering more consistent quality. The new technology can also produce wheels for electric bicycles, including those fitted with wider rims. The development is strategically important because it allows the company to manufacture more components in-house, reducing its reliance on foreign suppliers.
Neuzer’s development shows that in today’s bicycle industry, producing high-quality products is only part of what it takes to remain competitive. In a global market, manufacturers must also keep pace with technological change and continuously improve the way they operate. For customers, it is encouraging to see that Hungarian manufacturers can offer modern and appealing bicycles that respond to current market needs, while shorter supply chains can also help reduce the environmental impact of production and distribution.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project GINOP_PLUSZ-1.1.2-21-2022-00081 under the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme Plus.
