Improving Children’s Homes for a Better Quality of Life
For children growing up in residential care, a children’s home is more than just a place to stay. For many, it is where they spend a significant part of their childhood, sometimes for many years. That is why it is so important to provide a safe, welcoming and comfortable environment where they can feel secure and cared for. The physical surroundings play a vital role in their emotional well-being and development, helping to create a sense of stability and belonging. Thanks to an EU-funded project, four residential care facilities in Budapest and the surrounding area have undergone major improvements.
At the Gábor Sztehlo Children’s Home and Residential Care Facility for People with Disabilities in Budapest’s District II, the heating and electrical systems were upgraded, the kitchen was modernised, and the staircase and playground were replaced. The entire building was repainted inside and out, while a new visitor room and an accessible toilet were also added.
At the Attila József Children’s Home Centre in District XVIII, bathrooms, toilets and kitchens were completely refurbished. Outdated plumbing was replaced, along with parquet flooring and doors, and the entire building received a fresh coat of paint.
At the Margit Kaffka Aftercare and Children’s Home Centre in District XII, improvements included upgraded fire safety measures, wall repairs, the creation of an accessible visitor room and the installation of new outdoor playground equipment.
The Gábor Sztehlo Children’s Home’s residential care facility in Törökbálint also underwent extensive renovation. Bathrooms, toilets and living spaces were refurbished, and accessibility was improved both inside and outside the building. The electrical system was upgraded, external wall insulation was installed, and windows, doors and the heating boiler were replaced.
These improvements have helped enhance the quality of life and well-being of children and young people living in residential care. Modern, energy-efficient and welcoming surroundings make everyday life more comfortable and enjoyable, while providing a greater sense of security and belonging. At the same time, the upgrades have made the facilities more cost-effective to operate, ensuring that the benefits of these improvements will continue to be felt for years to come.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project VEKOP-1.2.1-16-2016-00120 under the Competitive Central Hungary Operational Programme.
