Transport on the Szombathely-Zalaszentiván railway line has become more efficient, sustainable, environmentally friendly and comfortable thanks to the modernisation of the line funded by the European Union. The objective of the development, carried out by Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurti Vasút Zrt. (GYSEV), was to improve the infrastructure and service quality of the railway line and to facilitate sustainable transport.
Thanks to the development in an approximately 48-kilometre section a new overhead electric line system was installed and on a 3-kilometre section the entire railway track was renewed. Modern, accessible elevated platforms have been installed at four stations and five stops on the line. The passenger areas and platform lighting systems have been renovated and new bicycle storage facilities have been built. At the same time, the line’s central traffic management system was upgraded as part of another related EU development. As a result of the modernisation of the Szombathely-Zalaszentiván railway line, the next phase of the long-term development of the north-south Borostyán railway corridor was completed on a further 48 km, joining the electrification and modernisation works on the Mosonszolnok-Csorna-Porpác line. Thanks to the project, freight trains travelling from Győr, Sopron, Vienna and Bratislava to the port of Koper will be able to use environmentally friendly electric traction throughout their journey.
The development was implemented from EU funding in project IKOP-2.1.0-15-2016-00007 under the Integrated Transport Development Operational Programme.
