Kölcse wastewater treatment plant: sustainable and modern solutions serving the local community

2025. 09. 03.

The development of the Kölcse wastewater treatment plant marked an important step in protecting the environment of the local community. The project aimed to modernize and expand the existing infrastructure, providing high-quality and sustainable wastewater treatment services for the residents of the settlement.

As a result of the completed development, the plant is capable of treating over 2,600 population equivalent (PE), offering modern wastewater management for nearly 2,700 residents in the surrounding villages.

Instead of the old technology and social building, a new operations building was established on the site, utilizing a new biological treatment process. This process consists of two parallel anaerobic–anoxic–aerobic zones and two secondary clarifiers. The continuous-flow, activated sludge technology operates with automatic process control and deep-air injection, ensuring efficient and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment. As part of the project, minor reconstruction of the sewer network was also carried out, affecting the settlements of Sonkád and Fülesd.

The EU-funded project contributes to reducing the environmental burden caused by wastewater, promoting sustainable development, and improving the quality of life for the local community by providing high-standard public services.

The development was implemented from EU funding in the project KEHOP-2.2.2-15-2015-00029 under the Environmental and Energy Efficiency Operational Programme.
