Let’s hit the road! – Road construction meets museum pedagogy

2024. 06. 04.

The Kiskőrös Road History Museum brought closer to young people the exciting world of road construction with unique programs.

The Kiskőrös Road History Museum of the Magyar Közút Nonprofit Zrt. fits in a special way into the Közút Zrt.’s education programs for youth. Its activities not only reach the interested public of the villages and towns in the Kiskőrös district, but also offer unique experiences and programs to young people throughout the country.

Within the framework of the project “Közutazzunk!”, supported by EU and domestic funds under the Human Resources Development Operational Programme, cooperation agreements were signed with six educational institutions, and a variety of museum education programmes were developed for children of all ages.

The activities took place in various forms, there was a series, a theme day, a cultural class, and a camp as well.   All these activities gave the children a deeper knowledge of road building, a better understanding of the profession and the different tools used throughout history. They could also become “engineers” or “road builders” for a short time, tracing the history of transport and the development of roads from ancient times to the present day. Apart from brushing up on their knowledge about physics, they expanded it as well by using measuring instruments and studying the workings of machines, moreover they have spent time learning about the development of cartography too.

The youngest children were taught the basic traffic safety rules and road signs in a KRESZ (rules of the road) park using scooters. There were many competitions, such as an asphalt drawing competition, bridge and road building, KRESZ knowledge testing and other skill games.

For disadvantaged and cumulatively disadvantaged children, the interactive elements of the institution were presented in a tangible, testable form tailored to their abilities. This also provided them with a personalized road history experience.

As a result of the project, the knowledge of children and students expanded significantly, and their scientific competences improved. The unusual activities of the museum also helped the students to recognize the beauty inherent in the road construction profession and its invaluable practical benefit to society.
