Miskolctapolca is one of the most popular parts of Miskolc among locals—if not the favorite—where people love to spend their free time, whether going for a relaxing walk or enjoying more active recreation. Thanks to support from the European Union, a comprehensive green development project has transformed the area, improving quality of life for residents and boosting its appeal to visitors.
As part of the project, Barabits Promenade—one of the district’s busiest streets—was completely repaved with new concrete paving stones, and the entire utility infrastructure was upgraded. Modern lampposts and street furniture were installed, and new pavilions were built along the eastern side of the promenade, designed to meet both current standards and local architectural guidelines—all thoughtfully planned to fit the natural surroundings.
The Lake Promenade was also given a major transformation. It now offers step-free access, connecting the new Market Square in front of the Cave Bath with Lookout Square by the Boating Lake. The Geometric Park was also upgraded, including the addition of an accessible public restroom, or “comfort point.” Eleven custom-designed educational signs were placed throughout the park, showcasing the area’s natural features, ancient trees, local wildlife, the park’s history, and the newly planted shrubs and perennials.
After years of buildup, sludge was finally removed from the Boating Lake, and the shoreline was reinforced. Around the lake, new benches, lampposts, WPC decking sun terraces, and cantilevered piers were added. The renovated Lookout Square not only offers beautiful views of the lake and fountain, but also provides spaces to rest and refresh, with new benches and drinking fountains. Two bridges that allow visitors to circle the lake were also restored, and the much-loved squirrel sculptures—favorites among locals—were returned.
The landscaping effort included planting around 100 trees, 9,000 shrubs, 18,000 perennials, 2,300 annuals, 350 roses, and 6,600 bulbs—helping to create a lush, natural, and visually pleasing environment.
This project marks another milestone for Miskolctapolca—a great example of how nature and built spaces can be renewed in harmony. It enhances the experience of today’s visitors while creating lasting value for future generations.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP-6.3.2-16-MI1-2017-00002 under the Integrated Transport Development Operational Programme.
