Modern children’s home in a family-like environment

2025. 04. 30.

Thirty-two girls with special needs have moved into a new, modern building thanks to the EU funded project titled Relocation of the Klára Kornis Children’s Home in the Capital. The development, funded under the Széchenyi 2020 program, aimed to create a modern, safe, and family-like environment that provides an optimal setting for the children’s development and integration into society.

In recent years, the number of children receiving specialized child protection care has increased, and proportionally, the number of children with special needs has also risen. Unfortunately, not all of them can be placed with foster families, and the existing capacities of children’s homes catering to those with special needs are also insufficient. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to establish children’s homes and groups within homes that can provide a professionally adequate environment for children requiring a higher level of supervision.

The 32-bed girls’ home located on Soroksári Road is equipped to accommodate children with special needs who require increased support — such as those who use psychoactive substances or struggle with severe behavioral and integration disorders, or antisocial behavioral patterns. A key goal is to support the girls living here throughout their transition into adulthood, helping them prepare for independent adult life during their stay.

The children live in groups of eight, with each group housed in two-bed rooms. Each residential unit includes communal spaces, bathrooms, a kitchen, and a dining area, ensuring that every young person has both personal space and opportunities for shared experiences. The garden surrounding the building has been landscaped, offering areas for sports and relaxation. An accessible parking space has also been created within the grounds.

As part of the project, not only was a new building constructed, but an existing structure on the same site was also renovated. This refurbished section now houses the facility’s support services, including storage rooms, administrative offices, a fitness room, and medical and sick rooms that provide healthcare services for the children.

A key consideration during the design of the building was to create a homely, welcoming atmosphere. In the residential areas, special attention was given to selecting furnishings made from light, warm-colored materials to support a sense of comfort and belonging.

The creation of this modern institution marks an important step forward in the field of child protection, helping ensure that future generations can begin their lives in the best possible environment.
