Nyírjes – where nature and culture walk hand in hand

2025. 05. 26.

Thanks to European Union funding, a new development has taken shape in the Nyírjes district of Balassagyarmat that can even entice the most dedicated homebodies to step outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Nyírjes is a popular resort area around Balassagyarmat, a favorite destination for those seeking closeness to nature. The artificial lake system, consisting of six lakes, serves visitors looking to relax with a free beach, paintball fields, a wildlife park, and nature trails.

The local government obtained the necessary funding through an EU grant for a major development project. The project, which began in 2021 and covered several locations, renewed the area by combining local natural features with opportunities for culture and relaxation. At the heart of the development is a brand-new Playhouse, which is not only a realm for children: alongside presentations of the natural environment, folk art and cultural values, as well as literary works connected to Balassagyarmat, also found a home here.

The development was not confined within walls: surrounding tourist trails were renovated, new nature trails and resting spots were created, and even a modern Visitor Center was built. This center includes not only a hospitality area and souvenir shop but also sanitary facilities catering to nature lovers. Newly established parking lots further enhance comfort.

The Playhouse was equipped with new outdoor and indoor furniture and toys, while the Visitor Center received kitchen technology and furnishings, and even a digital information kiosk was installed. One of the cleverest innovations is the “poetry benches” featuring QR code solutions; scanning these codes allows visitors to listen to works by poets and writers connected to Balassagyarmat.

The project had two main goals: to make Nyírjes more appealing to tourists, and to offer locals a livable, multifunctional community space. The complex, open all year round, welcomes not only nature lovers but also those interested in culture. Thanks to its family-friendly design and diverse programs, the number of visitors is expected to grow – and perhaps local poetry will find new fans while people sit and relax on one of the benches.

The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP-1.2.1-15-NG1-2016-00020 under the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme.
