The General Directorate of Water Management has implemented Water level rehabilitation in the Moson-Danube’s estuary with the support of the Environmental and Energy Efficiency Operational Programme. Behind the seemingly complex project title that can be difficult to interpret for the general public, there are very important achievements: the protection of the population and the conservation and restoration of natural habitats.
The significant riverbed subsidence on the Danube and the rise in flood levels caused by climate change pose a serious challenge for the region. To reduce damage, comprehensive improvements have been made in the lower reaches of the Moson-Danube, focusing not only on direct protection but also on long-term sustainability.
The development in the lower part of the Moson-Danube was aimed at raising small and medium water levels and restoring the estuary water level corresponding to the supporting effect of the Danube, thus making it possible to rehabilitate wetlands. In order to achieve the above mentioned goals, it was necessary to create a complex construction which consists of a structural member provided flood gate function and water level control, a ship lock, and a fish ladder which ensures the ecological interoperability of the Moson- Danube such as the migration of the aquatic animals.
As part of the project, the estuary of the Moson-Danube was relocated, partly through the Farkasúsztató branch and partly through the Torda-sziget, it leads the water of the Moson-Danube into the Danube about a mile and a half above the previous estuary. Moreover, the former riverbed was transferred over the Győr- Gönyű National Public Port.
The developments are exemplary in how to combine flood protection and nature conservation aspects. The development of this complex contruction, the relocation of the estuary and the rehabilitation of wetlands all contribute to keeping the area sustainable and safe in the long run. The project will bring significant benefits not only to the local community but also to nature, ensuring that the ecological and economic values of the Moson-Danube are preserved.
