The summer heatwaves, extreme temperatures and prolonged droughts of recent years have affected Hungary as well. As these conditions become increasingly familiar, perhaps we are all beginning to realise just how precious clean drinking water really is.
Drinking water is one of the most essential public services, yet it is also one we rarely think about in our everyday lives. We simply turn on the tap and expect clean, safe water to flow. This is why projects that make reliable drinking water available to communities where it has not always been guaranteed are so important.
In Fényestelep, a district of Hajdúhadház, the water supplied by the deep-drilled well serving the area had previously failed to meet statutory quality standards in several respects. To address the problem, the Municipality of Hajdúhadház applied for funding under the Széchenyi 2020 programme to carry out a water quality improvement project, largely financed by the European Union. Improving access to safe drinking water is also a key EU priority, as investments of this kind help communities respond to future challenges such as increasing demand for water and the effects of climate change.
As part of the project, Fényestelep was connected to the Hajdúhadház water supply network via a new transmission pipeline, replacing the previous reliance on the local drilled well. A new facility was also built to stabilise water pressure and balance fluctuations in supply, while sections of Fényestelep’s drinking water network were upgraded.
Thanks to the development, residents now have access to drinking water that meets the required quality standards. The improvements have also made the local water supply more reliable and reduced the risk of contamination caused by frequent faults in the network.
Perhaps the best sign of a successful drinking water project is that, in everyday life, it goes almost unnoticed. When clean, safe water flows reliably from the tap, breakdowns become less frequent and the system simply works as it should, the investment has achieved its purpose. A dependable supply of high-quality drinking water not only improves residents’ quality of life but also strengthens the long-term future of the community. Infrastructure improvements may not always be highly visible, but they provide one of the most important foundations for a community to develop sustainably and for residents to look to the future with confidence.
