Strengthening local identity and community life in Mátraderecske

2025. 08. 01.

The village of Mátraderecske took part in a development program aimed at strengthening local identity and revitalizing community life. In partnership with the Forti Pectore Association, the local government worked to bring residents closer together and spark long-term, positive social change.

Located in Heves County within the Pétervására district—a region identified as in need of development by the Hungarian government—Mátraderecske was a fitting location for such an initiative, where grassroots efforts and local unity can make a real difference.

The EU-funded project was inclusive, involving the entire community. It reached all age groups—from preschoolers and students to working adults and seniors. Special attention was also given to national, ethnic, and minority communities. After all, a community grows stronger when everyone has a voice and a role. Ensuring equal opportunity was a key principle throughout, with every program designed to be open and accessible to all.

The project began with a comprehensive needs assessment and community planning process, allowing residents to identify the most pressing local issues together. One message came through clearly: there was a strong desire for more community events, cultural and heritage-focused programs, and the infrastructure to support them.

As a result, a range of initiatives was launched to strengthen local cohesion. Quarterly community events and regular new programs helped keep the momentum going and deepen engagement. Local history also played a central role—helping people connect with their roots and build pride in their village. Community gatherings, exhibitions, intergenerational learning sessions, lectures, and cultural activities all contributed to a stronger, more connected Mátraderecske. The necessary equipment for these events was also purchased.

Local civil organizations played a vital role throughout. Their ongoing dedication, tradition-preserving work, and service to the community have been essential to the village’s progress.

The project also paid close attention to residents facing greater social and economic challenges. Programs were launched to support people living in poverty, and initiatives focused on crime prevention and improving public safety made the village a safer, more livable place. A new community information point was established to help residents stay informed, and study trips and training sessions offered opportunities to learn from best practices in other regions.

As part of the program, key strategic documents guiding Mátraderecske’s social and economic development were reviewed and updated, helping ensure that the improvements remain sustainable in the long term.

Thanks to the combined efforts of residents, local institutions, civil organizations, and businesses, a powerful sense of community has taken root—one that will continue to strengthen Mátraderecske’s identity and quality of life for years to come.

The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP-5.3.1-16-HE1-2017-00007 under the Integrated Transport Development Operational Programme.
