Sustainable Tourism Development in Nagykörű Village

2025. 02. 28.

Nagykörű has won a non-repayable grant in the regional-level tourism development application of the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme (TSDOP). The project aims to strengthen the region’s attractiveness through the development of unique tourism infrastructure, which in turn is expected to increase the number of visitors to the area.

Tourism in Hungary carries significant economic potential, but in many regions, there are no conditions for the tourism-oriented utilization of cultural, natural, and built heritage. With the support of the European Union, there is an opportunity to develop cultural and natural heritage, modernize event venues, create thematic routes, and implement various ecotourism developments. All of this could lead to increased revenue for local businesses and greater job opportunities, making the regions more sustainable, and tourism can contribute to the economic stability of the regions in the long term.

The Municipality of Nagykörű envisioned and implemented a complex project that focuses on a new and highly attractive attraction, which alone is capable of expanding the local tourism offer. Beyond that, it acts as a catalyst for various water tourism, ecotourism, and cultural tourism elements, both existing and newly created, in the area. The centerpiece of the development is the Canopy House and walkway. The pictures speak for themselves: a unique attraction has been created in the floodplain forest, which is a true standout in the field of nature trails.

In order to develop active and water tourism, a Floodplain Guesthouse has been built, offering multifunctional indoor and outdoor spaces, event venues, and an accessible design for the comfort of visitors. To showcase local cultural and gastronomic values, at least six events and markets are organized annually.

Traditionally, the village has been one of the domestic strongholds of cherry cultivation, and in response to this, the Cherry Trail has been created, with thematic ecotours catering to various age groups. As part of the project, further infrastructure developments have been carried out, such as a thematic floodplain playground, information points, selective waste collection, and outdoor sports fields. The goal was to create a comprehensive offer that could attract visitors year-round.
