Between 2014 and 2020, the Integrated Transport Operational Programme (ITOP) contributed to improving the quality of public transport services in Hungary with several significant projects, including a complex set of projects, which, with EU funding, expanded Budapest’s tram and trolleybus fleet, and renewed the road network and a number of stops.
The project has further modernised the public transport system in Budapest, with 47 new CAF trams and 36 Solaris trolleybuses; renewed and accessible tram stops; and modern depot to ensure the operation of the vehicles.
State-of-the-art vehicles have improved the travel experience and made transport more sustainable. The project also renewed the power supply system and rebuilt 55 tram station platforms in South Buda to adjust to the height and length of the new vehicles. This has made it easier for wheelchair and pushchair users to get on and off the trams, and there is now a guide rail for the visually impaired. In addition to the technical upgrades, the stations have been given a more attractive environment, with more green spaces and a uniform appearance. The renewed depots can accommodate new vehicles, improving the quality of maintenance and storage, which contributes to the reliability and efficiency of the service.
The project was implemented in the framework of the IKOP-3.1.0-15-2016-00005 programme, with EU funding, under the Integrated Transport Development Operational Programme.
