We are getting to Lake Balaton faster and faster

2024. 09. 06.

Some say summer is still ongoing, while others are already preparing for autumn, but one thing is certain: when traveling to Lake Balaton, everyone can find a great program for themselves. One last splash, one last lángos, or a simply event during the harvest season which makes Lake Balaton a popular travel destination even at the end of the summer season.

Anyone who has traveled by train to the northern shore of Lake Balaton knows that the line was not electrified, so the train had to change locomotives, which caused the most nerve-wracking waits for passengers who were already imagining themselves splashing in the lake.

Thanks to the Széchenyi 2020 program, starting from 2021, there is no longer a need for this somewhat unpleasant yet necessary move, as rails on the Szabadbattyán-Balatonfüred section became electrifield with the involvement of European Union funding. This means we can travel from Budapest to Balatonfüred on an electrified railway line without changing locomotives. But it wasn’t just the railway track that underwent modernization; the stations in Polgárdi, Balatonkenese, Balatonfűzfő, and Alsóörs were also reconstructed. Accessible platforms were built and in addition, the stops received modern spatial lighting and loudspeaker passenger information systems.

Thanks to the development, we have taken another step closer to arriving at the refreshing Balaton from the capital by a fast and comfortable train journey.
