It is easy to spend the whole day by Lake Balaton. A swim, an ice cream by the shore, another dip in the water, and suddenly the day is gone. But those staying a little longer may feel like exploring beyond the lakeside. Sümeg is a perfect choice, offering history, spectacular views and the feeling of stepping back in time.
Located on the western edge of the Balaton Uplands, Sümeg is a small town with a rich historical and cultural heritage. Its Baroque buildings, churches and old streets create a distinctive atmosphere, while Sümeg Castle rises high above the town as its best-known landmark. The oldest parts of the fortress date back to the 13th century, and its walls have witnessed centuries of wars and sieges. Today, visitors come for the panoramic views, the historic setting and the wide range of programmes.
After climbing up to the castle, a well-earned break awaits at the foot of Castle Hill. Sümegi Várcsárda has long been part of the town’s character. The building was the birthplace and home of Mór Kisfaludy, a lieutenant colonel during the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848–49 and nephew of poet Sándor Kisfaludy. The inn was already a popular restaurant in the early 20th century and has kept much of its traditional atmosphere. In summer, guests can sit beneath the walnut trees, while on cooler days the tiled stove offers a cosy place to warm up.
In recent years, modern technology has also found its place in this historic setting. With European Union funding, a solar panel system with a capacity of nearly 50 kWp was installed at the inn. It now helps cover part of the restaurant’s electricity demand with renewable energy, reducing both energy use and the environmental impact of its operation.
The development shows how history and modern solutions can work side by side. By making use of solar energy, the centuries-old setting can continue welcoming visitors to Sümeg in a more sustainable way.
