Keszthely has recently reached a significant milestone in its community development: a brand-new community center has opened at 45 Kossuth Street. Supported by European Union funding, the project aimed to create a modern, easily accessible space where the city’s cultural and social life can thrive in a new setting.
This much-needed investment transformed a municipally owned section of a building into a 142-square-meter, fully accessible community hub. The renovated space features two office rooms, accessible restrooms, and a spacious 48-square-meter central hall. The renovation work included the removal and reconstruction of interior walls, new flooring, installation of suspended ceilings and insulation, accessibility improvements, replacement of windows and doors, partial rewiring of the electrical system, a complete overhaul of plumbing, installation of a new gas meter, and the introduction of an energy-efficient heating system. The result is a modern, environmentally friendly facility.
Local civil organizations had long called for the creation of a dedicated civic centre. This long-awaited infrastructure marks a major step forward for local NGOs, which had previously struggled to find suitable spaces for their activities. The completed center can now host annual events and a wide range of programs run by various community groups. These cultural and social gatherings help strengthen community bonds, support quality leisure activities, and encourage dialogue across different social groups and generations.
In addition to its community benefits, the new center could also give a boost to the local economy, as its diverse program offerings make Keszthely more attractive to both residents and visitors alike.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP-7.1.1-16-H-ERFA-2020-00596 under the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme.
