A new nature theme park has been established due to the project implemented with the support of the Environmental and Energy Efficiency Operational Programme.
Within the framework of the project titled Presenting the Natura 2000 area, establishing its network and infratructure development in the area operated by the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate, we can gain an insight into the world of South Balaton.
It is certainly not known to many that the southwestern area of Lake Balaton has a special swamp region. Once the Nagyberek was the largest bay on Lake Balaton. As time passed by a significant portion of that natural swampy habitats have disappeared in this beautiful landscape. The White Water Marsh, the Ordacsehi Berek and the Pogányvölgyi meadows are all protected as part of the European Union’s Natura 2000 network, as they are home to many protected and highly protected animal and plant species.
The Natura 2000’s „reception gate ” is an interactive exhibition presenting the world of Nagyberek, includes a presentation of natural knowledge and social history, films and thematic sessions for school groups.
Walking almost a kilometer of the European pond turtle education trail, we can get acquainted with the history of the Ordacsehi people, the importance of Natura 2000 sites, the importance of restoring wetlands, the habitats in the area, the wildlife of the creek, and invasive organisms that endanger native organisms living here.
The visitor center situated on the edge of the Ordacsehi-berek in Fonyódliget awaits visitors interested in the natural values of the Berek, as well as wetlands and swamps.
