Energy-efficient boiler system provides district heating for Sopron residents

2024. 02. 15.

Sopron Holding Zrt., which provides district heating services in the city of Sopron, has implemented improvements to reduce service costs and greenhouse gas emissions as part of an EU-funded project.

The project was co-financed by the European Union and the Hungarian state with the support of the Operational Programme for the Environment and Energy Efficiency (KEHOP) and contributes to one of the KEHOP’s priority objectives, namely to reduce pollution and increase energy efficiency in companies.

As a result of the improvements implemented in the framework of the project, Sopron Holding Zrt. is able to provide district heating services in an energy-efficient way, with significantly reduced emissions, which creates a healthier living environment for the residents of Sopron and the surrounding municipalities.

The improvements involved replacing an outdated, poorly efficient hot water boiler fired by fuel oil and natural gas with a modern gas boiler with a so-called integrated condensing flue gas heat recovery system. A new self-supporting steel chimney with two separate passages was also built for the boiler, which is suitable for the connection of a new condensing gas boiler to be installed at a later date.

The modern and energy-efficient boiler installed as a result of the project will reduce the use of natural gas, saving the city of Sopron more than HUF 32 million per year, and will also significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
