Go for a ride, Hungarian! – new paths in equestrian tourism

2024. 09. 24.

Keeping and breeding of horses as livestock has played a significant role in our country’s history from ancient times, and horse riding has become so intertwined with the Hungarian identity that we are often referred to as a horse-riding nation. The beginnings of equestrian tourism in Hungary date back to the period after World War II. Although for a long time afterward horse riding was considered a privilege for the elite, nowadays more and more of our fellow citizens are choosing this form of outdoor activity, and the education of equestrian culture is becoming increasingly significant.

The Hungarian Equestrian Tourism Association, as a beneficiary of the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme, has been given the opportunity to establish the conditions for the equestrian trail network in Hungary and the related services. Within the framework of the project titled “Establishing an Active Equestrian Tourism Network in the regions of Northern Hungary and Northern Great Plain,” funded by the EU, a total of 1,813 km of horse-riding route network has been created, designated by experts, featuring 31 equestrian tourism stops where animals are welcomed with covered horse shelters.

After the completion of the stops and renovated meeting points, providers have been prepared for equestrian tourism, organised into a network, and developed a unified theme, offering services of the same type and quality, which has now been introduced to the market. A tourism portal and route management application also assists those utilizing the service during horse riding. Thanks to the project, the two regions were successfully integrated into the national equestrian tourism network.

For those seeking an active tourism experience that prioritizes sustainability, horse riding combined with nature offers an incredibly interesting form of relaxation. This experience is unforgettable not only for professional horse riders but also for beginner equestrian tourists.
