Greener transportation in Kecskemét – step by step

2026. 01. 21.

In Kecskemét, it’s becoming increasingly important for transportation to be not only fast and convenient but also environmentally friendly. This aligns with EU requirements, but it’s also in the best interest of the city’s residents and local businesses. The city has been improving public transport with a long-term, sustainability-focused approach, supported by EU funding. Here’s how it’s happening.

Most of Kecskemét’s traffic is concentrated in the city center, where shopping, administrative services, and cultural life converge. At the same time, many residents from suburban neighborhoods and housing estates rely on buses for commuting or shopping. This made it especially important to introduce technical solutions in the busy downtown area that would both protect the environment and meet growing demand.

A previous EU-funded project laid the groundwork: modern hybrid buses were introduced, several bus stops across the city were renovated, and construction began on a new bus depot. Roads and pedestrian paths were also made safer and more user-friendly.

The current project continued this progress. The bus depot was completed, a new roundabout was built to improve access, and buses were equipped with onboard passenger information systems. A new multi-purpose service vehicle was also purchased to support maintenance of transport infrastructure.

Thanks to these improvements, public transport is now more reliable and environmentally friendly—not just in the city center but also toward industrial areas. With these steps, Kecskemét is moving closer to becoming a cleaner, more sustainable, and livable city.
