The primary goal of the Digital Consumer Protection project was to enhance consumer awareness among the population, promote law-abiding behavior among businesses, and reduce administrative burdens in the field of consumer protection. This was achieved by improving resource efficiency and easing the workload for customers.
Through EU-funded development, a specialized system was established, allowing the consumer protection authority to handle the entire procedure online—from submitting a complaint to issuing a decision. As a result, modern administration has replaced traditional paper-based procedures. Reducing paperwork not only benefits the environment but also accelerates the processing time of consumer-initiated or official procedures and improves the efficiency of inspections.
Consumer complaints often stem from a lack of awareness regarding consumer rights or businesses failing to comply with consumer protection regulations. Improving complaint management standards and fostering fair business practices enhance consumer trust, boost a company’s reputation, and ultimately contribute to the competitiveness of the economy. As part of the project, a comprehensive awareness campaign was launched to shape public perception, helping to create a more informed consumer base that is both willing and able to assert its rights.
The campaign’s most important official information platform is the completely modernized website: www.fogyasztovedelem.kormany.hu. The Consumer Protection Portal provides continuously updated, detailed information on product testing and current inspections. A dedicated section has been created for the dangerous products database, and a search function is also available to help consumers access information more easily. In addition to engaging and informative content, the website also provides direct access to the consumer protection administration platform.
As part of the project, a wide-reaching awareness campaign was launched, targeting various social groups. In addition to Facebook and Instagram, the campaign placed significant emphasis on YouTube. On these platforms, consumer protection messages were conveyed through quizzes and short videos, covering topics such as common scams that deceive shoppers and warranty and guarantee rights. Experts also held online lectures to help businesses adopt law-abiding practices and address the most common challenges. Additionally, a thematic podcast series featured insightful discussions on the most relevant consumer protection issues, providing valuable information for interested audiences.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project KÖFOP-1.0.0-VEKOP-15-2016-00031 under the Public Administration and Public Service Development Operational Programme.
