Learning is easier among dinosaurs

2024. 10. 07.

Through the Dino Kingdom project, funded under the Széchenyi 2020 program, the József Attila Municipal Library and Museum Collection in Komló has completely renovated and modernized its children’s section, now offering 21st-century services in a modern environment.

Why is lifelong learning so important? Knowledge is not only a tool necessary for obtaining and keeping a job, but it also permeates many other aspects of our lives. In our rapidly changing world, we need to continuously expand, update, and refresh our practical skills and knowledge related to our communities and environment. The concept of learning is also evolving: the skills and knowledge gained through leisure and cultural activities have become just as important as those acquired in formal education.

However, these new forms of learning—like traditional ones—are often less accessible to those who are at a disadvantage when it comes to education. For these individuals, it has become particularly important to have the opportunity to develop basic competencies related to lifelong learning outside of school, and as early as possible in life. Cultural institutions that serve as the hubs of a community’s cultural life, such as public collections (libraries, museums, archives) and cultural centers, are especially suited to providing such opportunities.

The József Attila Municipal Library and Museum Collection in Komló, in addition to housing a unique collection, places a strong emphasis on activities that support lifelong learning. However, the previously available infrastructure and technological equipment, as well as the lack of modern IT facilities, did not make the institution appealing to younger generations. This issue was addressed through a development project carried out under the Human Resources Development Operational Program, funded by both the EU and domestic sources.

The renovation included a complete overhaul of the premises: new flooring, mechanical upgrades, rebuilding of the restrooms, and even ensuring accessibility. Additionally, the institution acquired new equipment, such as interactive whiteboards for teaching, computers, digital drawing tablets, projectors, cameras, and video cameras. As a result of this modernization, a new fantasy world now awaits children aged up to 14 years old and their accompanying adults, providing a modern and experience-based setting for programs. In this renewed environment, even the youngest visitors are more inclined to use the library’s services.
