Let’s give wastewater a chance!

2024. 11. 25.

Who would have thought that wastewater also has a second chance? Kaposvár’s new purification system provides exactly that for the water – in the form of a thorough ‘wellness’ treatment! The old wastewater is given new life with the most modern technology, so it can return to nature fresh and clean. And all this while powering itself with biogas! Yes, here the wastewater not only gets cleaned but also gives back energy – in a process that is both green and eco-friendly.

Thanks to nearly 6 billion forints of EU support, Kaposvár has gained a truly modern, 21st-century wastewater treatment plant, which has replaced the outdated system built in 1990. The development realised under the Environmental and Energy Efficiency Operational Programme (KEHOP) significantly contributes to the protection of the environment in the city and the 18 settlements in its vicinity. In accordance with expectations, a long-term sustainable and fully automated system has been built, which simultaneously serves the protection of the environment and efficiency.

Like the city’s other major investments, the goal here was also to make public services safer and more affordable. Moreover, thanks to the new technology, Kaposvár is increasingly able to free itself from the major energy companies. The new facility is not only modern but also full of exciting technical solutions: for example, with the new grid-sand trap system and the two new biological blocks, the purification efficiency has significantly improved. Additionally, to be completely self-sufficient, a small power plant was also built within the facility, which meets the entire thermal energy demand of the plant and generates electricity from biogas. By converting the sewage sludge into biogas, the facility will be able to operate on its own energy in the future and even power the neighboring waste processing plant.

The facility, built along Road 61 east of Kaposvár, is operated by Kaposvár Water and Sewer Ltd. and provides a cleaner and more sustainable environment for over 140,000 local residents.
