Nearly 12 thousand people directly affected by flood protection improvements on the Tisza

2024. 08. 21.

With the support of the Environment and Energy Efficiency Operational Programme, the General Directorate of Water Management has increased flood safety along the entire national stretch of the Tisza. The interventions on a section of Hármas-Körös and in the flood protection bay of Nagy Sárrét are well aligned with the objectives of the Tisza Valley Flood Protection Development Concept and in line with relevant policy plans and strategies.

The technical necessity of the improvement was justified by the flood level, the unfavourable geotechnical condition of the embankments and the inadequate height of the main flood protection embankments in relation to the values set by the regulation. The area where the project was implemented is located in the municipalities of Mezőtúr and Gyomaendrőd. The embankment was upgraded between sections of the right bank of the Hármas-Körös river and a three-metre wide solid pavement was placed on the crest of the embankment, which will partly ensure safe access to the site during maintenance and flood damage clearance works and will also allow cycling. The crown level of the new embankment, including the pavement height, has been raised by one metre above the new flood level. In addition, several access roads and the Peres weir-keeper’s site were renovated, where the nearly 100-year-old weir keeper’s house was demolished and replaced by a new energy-efficient building. In addition to the self-propelled maintenance machine, trucks and a mobile compressor were purchased.

The interventions carried out under the project are designed, implemented and operated as a flood protection system, taking into account the scale of the assets to be protected, in particular the protection of human life and the extent of the flood risks.
