Infrastructure developments in the X. district of Budapest have significantly improved the safety and comfort of the cyclists and pedestrians. Thanks to the Competitive Central Hungary Operational Programme many new cycle paths and lanes were built.
Within the framework of the project the Budapest Transport Centre has created cycle lanes in different streets in the district, such as Gitár Street, Kőér Street, between Gyömrői Road and Sörgyár Street, and also at the Kőér Street’s railway crossing to make the crossing for the cyclists safer and easier. In addition, a bicycle lane was built on both sides of Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Road, between Halom Street and Előd Street. The surroundings of Óhegy Park being popular with cyclists and families because of its green spaces, have been modernised with new traffic management to help cyclists and zones were built where traffic is mitigated. Automatic cycle counters have been installed at the Gyömrői Road’s railway crossing and on the Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Road.
When planning, it was important to ensure that the paths were connected to the rest of the network. The construction of the missing sections of the Kőbánya cycle path network has created fast and safe connections within the district. Moreover public and educational institutions in the centre of the district, shops, major transport hubs, St. László Square and green areas are more quickly available, as well road risks have been mitigated. Safer conditions can make sustainable transport even more attractive, so it is not a hidden goal that more and more people are encouraged to choose cycling or combine it with public transport.
