Progressive developments in Kecskemét

2024. 07. 29.

With the support of the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme, the county’s so-called ‘sand pit’ part has been renewed, which has become an environmentally conscious, family- and climate-friendly and more liveable area.

Kecskemét’s economic importance is growing year by year, which induces a growing population and an increase in the number of employees from different counties. This is why it was necessary to rehabilitate disused but well-located areas. The goal was to be able to break the centralization of the city and make basic services more accessible in places situated further from the downtown. In this way, continuous traffic jams and congestion can be reduced in the long run.

During the implementation of the project titled ‘Creating a Green City in the Sand Pit’, a bike park, a cycling skill development track, a playground and a running track were set up in the public green spaces and outdoor fitness equipment was installed as well. There is also an outdoor skatepark track with different slopes, ascending and curved elements and a BMX pump track. The tracks are not designed for professional athletes, but for the population, so that all ages can play sports, do exercises and practice.

A pump track is a continuous circle track with ramps and turns. It helps cyclists to learn in a playful way how to use a bike rightly and have a good posture, moreover it improves their sense of balance and concentration while also offering training opportunities. It has a secure, built-in infrastructure and creates a challenging but controlled environment for users. A well-built track is suitable for both learning the basics and also for professional trainings and racing.

As part of the project, connecting roads and car parks were also built and an unused building of about 500 m2 was renewed, which provides closed rooms and indoor-open space for recreational programs.  In addition, it is home to the „ Bike and Coffee” facility and a KRESZ (rule of the road) park as well.

The park which has a drinking fountain and benches awaits those who wants to relax.  A nearly 10,000 square feet area has become greener and plenty of trees and shrubs were planted. The complete renovation of green spaces and public areas will increase the livability of the environment and improve the perception and attractiveness of the district.
