Count Móric Sándor, better known as the “Devil’s Horseman”, is one of the most fascinating figures in Hungarian history. His daring equestrian stunts made him famous across Europe, and his name is still closely associated with the castle in Bajna that was once his home. Today, this magnificent historic building has been brought back to life.
Located in Bajna, Komárom-Esztergom County, the Sándor–Metternich Castle underwent a major renovation with EU support. The aim was to preserve the building’s outstanding historic and artistic features while creating a cultural and tourist attraction that visitors can enjoy throughout the year.
The renovation covered both floors of the main building and required great care. Many of the rooms are decorated with Baroque or Neoclassical wall paintings created by renowned foreign artists and craftsmen. These artworks have been carefully restored and are now open for visitors to admire. One of the project’s greatest achievements was the return of a magnificent 19th-century ceiling painting to its original place in the upstairs Raphael Room. The artwork was designed by the famous Italian artist Alessandro Sanquirico.
The castle’s windows and doors were also renovated, its historic floors restored, and its mechanical and electrical systems modernised. The restored castle chapel on the ground floor has also reopened to visitors. The café and gift shop are located in a room decorated with surviving Baroque wall paintings. The former steward’s courtyard now includes service and operational areas, while the side wing houses restrooms and other visitor facilities.
The renewed exhibitions naturally focus on the Devil’s Horseman himself. Visitors can learn about the adventurous life of Count Móric Sándor, his legendary riding feats and his family. The exhibitions also tell the centuries-old story of the castle, reveal some of the secrets behind its restoration and even offer a glimpse into the world of historical fashion.
Modern interactive features make the experience even more engaging. Digital installations, along with virtual and augmented reality applications, help bring the past to life. Visitors can watch scenes inspired by earlier times, discover stories connected to the castle and even try on period-style accessories, bringing them closer to the world of its former residents.
The formal garden surrounded by the main building and side wings has also been restored to its former beauty. The wider castle park was renewed while preserving its historic character and recreating elements of its original appearance. New walking paths, visual attractions, a playground, land-art installations, photo spots and rest areas make the grounds even more enjoyable to explore. The Devil’s Horseman theme also continues outdoors, as the playground takes inspiration from his famous equestrian stunts.
The castle also serves as an impressive venue for events. Its elegant rooms are suitable for gala dinners, chamber concerts, weddings and private functions, while the historic setting also makes it an attractive location for film productions.
The legend of the Devil’s Horseman lives on at the Sándor–Metternich Castle in Bajna. His story is no longer hidden within the castle walls, but brought to life once again for visitors to discover.
