Development of innovative home textiles that protect against pathogens in Baranya County

2024. 07. 01.

Within the framework of a project supported by the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme, Hungary’s leading textile manufacturer and distributor, in cooperation with researchers from the University of Pécs, has developed an impregnating material that, when applied to curtains and other home textiles, provides effective protection against various bacterial and viral contaminants and pathogens and also reduces their development.

Established in 1996, Rovitex Hungária Kft. has become a market leader in the field of domestic home textile trade and has a dominant position in the international market, as well as a manufacturer. The aim of the company’s R&D innovation project titled Development of high-efficiency and environmentally friendly textile impregnation technology at Rovitex Ltd. was to develop an environmentally friendly textile impregnation technology suitable for the large-scale production of antimicrobial fabrics. These are in increasing demand in hospitals and care homes,  especially since the advent of the COVID pandemic.

The grant was used to cover the salary costs of researchers and developers, the cost of materials, the purchase of a sample making and gluing machine, independent expert testing, microbiological and analytical services, the construction of a plant hall and project management services.

Antibacterial textiles will be used not only in institutions, but also in other public places, hotels, restaurants, public transport and, of course, in homes. High-efficiency and environmentally friendly textile impregnation technology could play a major role in the future in preventing infections and protecting health.

The program was implemented with European Union funding under the GINOP-2.1.2-8-1-4-16-2018-00686 project.
