Generon: innovation raised the roof

2025. 09. 24.

Like many other businesses, Terrán Roof Tile Manufacturing Ltd. — a company with over 100 years of history — knows that in today’s fast-changing world, continuous innovation in products and services is essential. Thanks to a successful grant application, the company was able to bring one of its unique ideas to life.

A few years ago, Terrán began a research and development project aimed at transforming roof surfaces from passive, non-productive elements into active, energy-generating systems.

The family-owned business was founded in 1920 by Kálmán Mészáros, originally specializing in concrete roof tiles. What began with handcrafted products later expanded with modern production lines in Bóly, and eventually grew into a period of product development. Over time, new shapes, colors, and product families were introduced, earning several industry awards. Today, Terrán has become one of Central Europe’s leading manufacturers of concrete roof tiles and roofing systems, combining tradition with innovation and maintaining a strong commitment to quality.

The EU-funded project led to the creation of an in-roof solar tile, integrated directly into the surface of the roof tile itself. This resulted in the final prototype of the Generon solar roof tile. The new roofing solution can significantly reduce household electricity bills while also being sustainable and environmentally friendly. Its base is a concrete roof tile — energy-efficient to produce and with a low environmental footprint. What makes it stand out is the way solar cells are uniquely embedded into the surface of the tiles, while installation and appearance remain almost indistinguishable from traditional roof tiles. After the new production line was launched at the Bóly site, cost-effective mass production under industrial conditions began.

By realizing this project, Terrán Roof Tile Manufacturing Ltd. has introduced an innovative roofing solution that not only strengthens its competitiveness and export potential but also contributes to Hungary’s economic growth and international recognition.

The development was implemented from EU funding in the project GINOP-2.1.2-8-1-4-16-2018-00484 under the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme Plus.
