The castle of Eger is the place where one of the most outstanding events in the Hungarian history took place. The Hungarian castle was heroically defended against the Ottomans in 1552, which has been an important historical event for the country ever since, which is why it is important to preserve this heritage.
Following the siege of 1552, the castle’s condition was becoming worse and worse up until the 20th century when the reconstruction and conservation works began, which have been ongoing ever since. This process includes a large-scale project titled “Tourist Development of the Eger Castle and Fortress System”, implemented from European Union funding under the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme. Due to this, significant improvements have taken place in the castle’s area. The aim of the project was that the castle, as a tourist attraction, would provide great experience for people going there.
The castle’s infrastructure has been restored to its authentical form, moreover, exhibition halls have been created with modern equipment and other investments have been made to improve visitors’ comfort. The South Entrance Castle Staircase has been renovated, making it safer and more comfortable for visitors to enter the castle, which condition’s formerly was dangerous. Cashiers have been replaced by a modern, multifunctional reception building, making buying ticket even more convenient. As part of the development, one of the castle’s largest rampart, as well the Varkoch gate tower were rebuilt. The renovation has also restored the highest point of the castle called Flag Hill to its original form, and created a 70-seat screening room inside, where people can watch a documentary titled as “Eger 1552”. The renewed „Cipóosztó” House offers a taste of the 16th century gastronomy and manages to recall the building’s former function with its period furniture, kitchen utensils and crockery. The project has eliminated the waterlogging that was threatening the cellar system and has also provided new paving in several areas of the castle’s visitor area. Modern lighting will allow the castle to shine above the city in all splendour at night.
Thanks to the project, the Eger Castle is still a worthy historical monument and a modern, multifunctional tourist destination, as well a great experience for all ages.
