A green, livable, and modern urban area has started to born in the sand quarry district of Kecskemét. The developments reveal more and more of the concept year by year in which the complete rehabilitation and reconstruction of a city district is taking place.
In developments of this scale, it is extremely important to thoroughly plan the supporting infrastructure and to provide services that meet the needs of the population. For families, one of the most important considerations when choosing a place to live is that their children receive nearby and safe nursery, kindergarten, and school care. Therefore, in the Homokbánya district, ensuring nursery care was a priority in urban planning.
Within the framework of the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme, a nursery capable of accommodating a total of 52 children in four groups was established with EU funding. The institution is nearly 700 m2, spacious, has high-ceilinged group rooms, a ladybug-shaped community space, and an 1100 m2 grassy playground, which awaits the little ones. The interior color scheme and decoration, as well as the names of the groups, evoke the colors and animals of the meadow, referring to the proximity of nature and the character of the green neighborhood.
Each group room has its own bathroom and also has direct access to the shaded terrace and courtyard. The new building also features a community space, which can be used to replace outdoor games in case of unfavorable weather, and is also an excellent venue for family programs. The barrier-free building and its surroundings make it accessible not only for the placement of children in daycare but also for participation in community programs for a wide range of social strata in terms of equal opportunities.
Considering the challenges of our time, technologies and methods were applied during the investment that enable the institution to operate in an energy-efficient manner. One of the most important elements of this sustainable system is the building’s solar panel system.
Thanks to the new Katica (Ladybug) Nursery, families moving to the Homokbánya district now have access to nursery services which can contribute to preserving the younger population of the district in the long term, facilitate the development of social connections, and strengthen local community identity. The new and attractive environment is not only an opportunity for families but also supports the city’s economic development.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project TOP-6.2.1-15-KE1-2016-00007 under the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme.
