A multi-thematic study repository has opened at the Jász Museum in Jászberény, funded by the European Union, where those eager to learn can simultaneously get acquainted with the local historical, archaeological, and ethnographic treasures of the region.
Although the Jász Museum had previously engaged in activities supporting lifelong learning, the infrastructure was outdated, and there were no modern facilities or technical equipment suitable for learning purposes. It became increasingly necessary to establish modern ICT infrastructure for the operation of learning processes, competency development, training, and services. Over the years, the establishment of learning, creative, and service spaces, as well as ensuring the accessibility of the entire collection of the nationally renowned Jász Museum, has been set as a goal. All this was made possible by the Széchenyi 2020 program, through the EU-funded project “Establishment of the Jász Museum’s Educational Room and Study Room in Jászberény” by the Municipality of Jászberény.
As part of the development, a space suitable for the simultaneous employment of 15 people was created in an unused warehouse, where various non-formal and informal learning opportunities, training sessions, and programs could be held. Here, the new IT equipment, ICT points, and audio points were also accommodated. All this resulted in an increase in the number of previous educational programs and a significant improvement in their quality.
Here, the ethnographic unit of the study room has also been established with a museum pedagogy classroom, where visitors can get acquainted with the games of our grandparents, old crafts, the finely crafted objects of folk art, household textiles, and the tools of traditional village kitchens, hygiene, and lighting. In addition, an archaeological and local history section suitable for indoor group activities and community-building events, as well as museum pedagogy sessions, has opened on the upper floor. In the archaeological section, visitors will find the memories of Bronze Age peoples, Sarmatian and Migration Period artifacts, Jász finds from the Négyszállás archaeological excavation, as well as coins from ancient times. Meanwhile, in the local history section, the secrets of Jászság come to life, from the memories collected about the area’s famous natives to the flying wonders of Jászság and the mysteries of the Jászberény crypt.
The study repository is publicly accessible, serving educational purposes in accordance with modern collection preservation and object security standards, while also functioning as a contemporary storage facility. As a result, it ensures the completion of collection organization, cleaning, and conservation tasks for the objects displayed in the repository, as well as the presentation of their cultural-historical background. The preparation of all these tasks takes place in the structured collection storage located on the ground floor of the building.
The Jász Museum has set ambitious plans based on the renewed infrastructure, which are being continuously realized. They have held historical playhouses and craft workshops here; they are planning camps and conferences on the topics of tradition preservation and value creation, museum evenings, and book presentations alongside traditional museum educational activities and temporary exhibitions.
With the development, Jászberény, in addition to making significant strides towards the comprehensive architectural and functional renewal of the city center, also contributed to strengthening community cohesion and expanding opportunities for lifelong learning, as evidenced by the increased number of local and regional visitors.
The development was implemented from EU funding in the project EFOP-4.1.9-16-2017-00002 under the Human Resource Development Operational Programme.
